If machining is about making something accurately, measurement is how you prove that you've achieved it.
Learning measurement properly should be one of your priorities as an apprentice.
Vernier calipers
A vernier is one of the most versatile tools in the workshop.
You can use it to measure outside dimensions, inside dimensions and depths.
It's excellent for quick checks, but you need to understand its limitations.
Don't use a vernier simply because it's the first tool you reach for.
The required tolerance should influence the measuring equipment you choose.
Micrometers
Micrometers allow you to make more precise measurements.
You'll learn how to measure diameters, check finished dimensions and determine whether a component is within tolerance.
The important thing isn't simply learning to read the scale.
You need to learn how to measure consistently.
Clean the component.
Clean the measuring faces.
Use the correct pressure.
Understand the tolerance.
Think about whether the result makes sense.
Dial Test Indicators
DTIs become extremely useful when you're setting up machines and checking alignment.
You'll use them for things such as:
Checking runout
Aligning work
Finding centres
Checking surfaces
Setting up components
Learning to use a DTI confidently is an important step in developing your setup skills.
Keep learning measurement
As you progress, you'll encounter more specialist inspection equipment.
You might eventually work with height gauges, bore gauges, internal micrometers, gauge blocks, CMMs and other metrology equipment.
Don't be intimidated by it.
Learn one tool at a time.
