There is no perfect way to become a machinist.

Everyone learns differently.

Find what works for you.

Don't be embarrassed by the things you don't know.

Don't compare your first year with someone's twentieth.

And don't be afraid to ask for help.

The most important thing you can bring into manufacturing isn't an expensive toolbox.

It's curiosity.

Want to know how something works.

Want to understand why it's done that way.

Want to learn another machine.

Want to improve your skills.

Want to make the next component better than the last one.

That's how you progress.

You start by discovering manufacturing.

You learn the fundamentals.

You learn the machines.

You develop good habits.

You build your toolkit.

You learn to measure.

You learn to look after your equipment.

You gain experience.

And eventually, you become the person who can help somebody else who is just starting where you once were.

Manufacturing needs that next generation.

It needs people who are curious, practical, creative and willing to learn.

So if you're considering an apprenticeship, don't worry about knowing everything.

Start somewhere.

Ask questions.
